The Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) is intended to be a prestigious, top end, international robotics competition, to be held every two years with total prizes of USD 5 Million.

Robotics has the potential to have an impact that is as transformative as the internet, with robotics technology poised to fuel a broad range of next-generation products and applications in a diverse array of fields.

Robotic competitions in the past few decades have been a catalyst that has accelerated the rate of technological advancements in the field of robotics and autonomous systems.

ABOUT

The Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) is intended to be a prestigious, top end, international robotics competition, to be held every two years with total prizes of USD 5 Million.

Robotics has the potential to have an impact that is as transformative as the internet, with robotics technology poised to fuel a broad range of next-generation products and applications in a diverse array of fields. Robotic competitions in the past few decades have been a catalyst that has accelerated the rate of technological advancements in the field of robotics and autonomous systems.

THE CHALLENGE

The competition is motivated by the technological challenges facing the next generation of robotics which is poised to have a transformative impact in a variety of new applications and markets. The enabling technologies required to make this happen include robots working more autonomously in dynamic, unstructured environments, while collaborating with other robots and humans. MBZIRC will focus on some of these enabling technologies, by providing a demanding set of benchmark robotics challenges to attract the best international teams, and to inspire innovation in robotics technology. MBZIRC 2016 will consist of three Challenges and a triathlon type Grand Challenge:

1. Challenge 1 requires UAV to locate, track and land on top of moving vehicle, and will involve the following tasks:

Locate moving vehicle, and detect an ‘event’ initiating the start of the Challenge
Navigate amongst obstacles to track the vehicle
Land at target location on top of the moving vehicle
2. Challenge 2 requires UGV to locate and reach the vehicle, and physically operate a valve on a side of the vehicle, and it will involve the following tasks:

The UGV will locate vehicle and navigate avoiding obstacles to approach the vehicle
The UGV will identify and locate a valve on one side of the vehicle, and approach the valve
The UGV will analyze the valve and select the appropriate tool to close the valve from a set of provided tools. An example valve and a set of tools is shown in Figure 2 for illustrative purposes only
Use the manipulator attached to the UGV to pick up the tool and operate the valve
3. Challenge 3 requires a team of UAVs to collaborate in searching, locating, tracking, picking and placing a set of static and moving objects.

The UAVs will collaborate to locate with the UGV, track, pick and re-locate a set of moving and static objects.
